With Florence and Siena behind me, it was about the small Tuscany towns from now on. Montepulciano had been strongly recommended, but I already liked the towns on the way, like Buonconvento.
Between the towns there was the typical Tuscany landscape.
Pienze was another small town I liked.
Montepulciano was on top of a hill, and I did what I thought was the toughest climb of the day.
After that I wanted to have dinner and sleep in a town in the South, but there was absolutely nothing for quite some time.
The only town with hotels was Abbadia San Salvatore, which I saw on the map 6 km away from the main road.
One kilometer on the way I looked at the profile and saw that I had to climb up from 350 to 840 meters above sea level!
I had found the Italian version of the city in the clouds. But there was no other option, so I fought my way up and settled for food and a bed completely exhausted.
