The hotel where I stayed in Avignon was perfect for me. It was a nice room with a large window in the center, but in a quiet road. The WIFI was great.
I also liked the town. It had everything of a big city, but it wasn't that big and dirty.
As it was Saturday and the next destinations were the ruins of Arles and Nimes, I decided to take a day off and stay in Avignon for the whole day and another night.
That way I could watch all the Bundesliga and other football games and stay away from the weekend tourists. Also I thought a day off physically and mentally would be a good thing.
So I went out in the morning to see the town. The center is within these walls.
Just around the corner there was the famous bridge that ends in the middle of the river.
Avignon was the residence of the popes in the 14th century. The bridge leads from the palace of the popes out of the center.
After my trip around the palace I went back to my room, put up my tablet and watched the full slate of games:
13:30 Wolverhampton - ManCity
15:30 Bremen - Hannover
18:30 M.-Gladbach - Leverkusen
20:30 Napoli - Milan
22:15 Valladolid - Barcelona
Between the Bremen and M.-Gladbach game there was just enough time to cycle to the other side of the river and take nice pictures from the palace and the bridge.
I also went out in halftimes to buy stuff and have dinner.
I even got up at night to watch parts of the Jets vs. Giants NFL preseason game.
It was very important to get a day off and I was eager to cycle through some flat regions of Provence the next day.
