I had cycled to Africa. An amazing feeling.
That emotion did hold up only until I realized that the ferry was not dropping me in Tanger, but 45 km East behind some hills. So I had to go up and down along the coast for the first part of the day.
Still it was awesome to be in Morocco, and it was a different world. Free animals were roaming around everywhere. Goats, sheep, donkeys, horses, cows and lots of dogs. So obviously I loved that, although it created some insecurity about what else to expect.
When I reached Tanger I was very surprised about the modern section. But around it and in the medina it was obviously different. The medinas are the old towns of the cities.
Because of the problems with my bicycle I had already decided not to go through the mountains to see Chefchouen. It was a tough decision because it had been recommended to me by lots of people I had talked to recently.
So I went South near the coast towards Rabat. Out of Tanger the small villages look totally different. There is always waste, abandoned buildings, smoke and poor people.
Many dogs roam around the waste areas to find food.
The roads are long and lonely. Sometimes people present their fruits and other stuff and I was happy to get peanuts at this place.
In Rabat I stayed in a very nice place in the middle of the medina. Just around the corner people presented their goods.
There was a little cat playing with my bicycle at the coast the morning I left Rabat towards Casablanca.
Casablanca itself was not so nice, it is a more modern city with very heavy traffic.
Beautiful however is the huge mosque at the coast. Its minaret is the highest in the world, which makes it the highest religious building in the world. Maybe this is why they are still working on the Cologne cathedral.
Casablanca was the last major destination before the end of my trip. It is an awesome feeling that I will reach Marrakesh in a few days.
