Day 49: Vatican

A healthy breakfast of Müsli with lots of fruits got me ready for the day. On my way to Vatican I had the rare pleasure of using a large bicycle trail.

At the Vatican the St. Peter's Basilica dominates the scenery, along with the large square.

To skip the waiting I decided to join a quick tour. Initially I wanted to get away from it behind the entrance, but it was actually pretty enjoyable and interesting as the lady told a lot about the circumstances in which Michelangelo worked on the ceiling and the main wall of the Sistine Chapel.

However, I also learned that the retired pope Benedikt XVI. is now living in the rooms you can see in the background of the garden.

Before entering the chapel, a lot more inside the Vatican museum could be seen.

There is a huge tapestry depicting the resurrection of Jesus.

Also in this hall leading towards the chapel entrance there is already a beautiful ceiling.

But for sure the main event was the view inside the chapel, here the wall depicting the last judgement. Michelangelo had been ordered by the pope to paint this wall after he had already finished the ceiling. He needed another 6 years for the wall.

More famous than the wall is the ceiling which he worked on day and night for 4 and a half years. It depicts elements of the Genesis, most famously the creation of Adam.

This was the last picture taken before I was thrown out of the chapel.

So I had enough of the big city. For sure I will be back to see more things in detail.
In the afternoon I left towards the Bracciano lake. It was a surprisingly beautiful ride.

It was also nice everywhere around the lake and I stayed at a very relaxed campground.
